Coding and Retrofitting

Coding

So what is coding?

Coding is basically the individual functions and operations contained within a particular control module, for example in a lighting module these could be -

  • Flashing the brake lights during emergency braking.
  • Activating/deactivating daytime running lights.
  • Changing the brightness of daytime running lights.
  • Flashing of the headlights when locking or unlocking the doors via the remote control.
  • Flashing of the headlights when the alarm system is triggered.

Most control module will have changeable coding options, sometimes these are derived from the options list available in the original build of the vehicle. By gaining access to the desired module at software level we are able to modify ( turn on or off ) these different options.

Retrofitting

Retrofitting is the operation used when upgrading a vehicle such as fitting a tow bar or upgrading an audio system. Tow bars for example usually require the vehicles ABS (anti-locking brake system) to be updated at software level to enable the braking system and stability systems to setup differently once a trailer or caravan is connected. Failure to complete these software changes can cause dangerous and unpredictable results from the vehicles computer systems.
